Case study: Limestone flagstones – Restoring an ancient floor

Our customer wanted to retain this original limestone flagstone floor in his recently renovated, 300 year old Cotswold cottage. However, the centuries had left their mark as it was very badly stained and scratched and extremely dirty. Our brief was to “bring it back to life”.

We were able to remove the worst of the marks and scratches before partially repointing and deep cleaning. As there was no damp course it was not possible to seal the flagstones completely but the customer was keen to have a sheen on the surface. By mechanically polishing the stone and then applying a micro porous sealant, we were able to help stain prevention in the future but also achieve the beautiful sheen he wanted.
